Over the last few months I’ve been creating watercolour paintings of the sea. With the easing of lockdown, I’ve been to Lytham St Annes beach, Berwick-upon-Tweed and Ross sands, Lindisfarne for inspiration.

One recent watercolour painting I’d like to share with you is Light upon the shore. Inspired by the beautiful contrast of light found at St Annes-on-sea beach in Lancashire.

One thing I love about this beach is how immersed you feel once you make the walk out to the tide (often the sea can be quite a long distance from the dunes).

Surrounded by flat sands, the sound of the wind and the sea, you meet nature again and the spectacular open skies. The light and the atmosphere found there is always inspiring. You see contrasting light, graduated tones of light as the weather moves around you.

Light upon the shore is a view is along the seashore from the open sands. Sunlight bursts through the clouds and reflects in the shallow pools along the shore. The colours intermingle with beautiful textures that only watercolour on paper can create. I’ve used a fairly textured paper by Italian paper maker Fabriano. The paint I’ve used for this watercolour is by Daniel Smith and some colours by Isaro - a Belgium colour maker.
