Recently, I’ve been painting a semi-abstract original oil painting on Italian linen titled Open shore, Lindisfarne.

It is inspired by my late spring, early summer visits to the sandy beach and coastline at Ross sands near Lindisfarne in Northumberland.

The open beach, fresh air and open skies over the sea was delightful to experience, bringing about feelings of peacefulness, happiness and a sense of wellbeing.

I've captured the light and movement found by the sea through minimal, directional shapes of expressive colour. With brushstrokes that overlay and interconnect over the full extent of the canvas.

The painting uses cadmium yellow light and titanium white as well as warm Scarlet red, cool crimson, burnt Sienna earth colour together with reddy blue French Ultramarine and rich Pthalo blue. I’ve used Williamsburg and Michael Harding oils on an oil primed linen canvas from Belle Arti canvases in Italy. The canvas is a standard depth of 1.8 cm (0.7 inches) but it can be framed to match any of my other oil paintings with a deeper frame.

Open shore, Lindisfarne would make an ideal reminder of nature, the beauty of the seashore and the perpetual movement of the elements.
