This watercolour painting celebrates the wonderful light, colour and atmosphere of sunset through the clouds based on pictures of Lytham St Annes beach from last year.
I’ve explored the dramatic light, movement and atmosphere of sunset over the sea. Sunset out to sea has soft colours of early sunset, with graduated tones created with lovely washes of Daniel Smith watercolour (Fresh cerulean blue, cadmium yellow and earthy Naples Yellow. Cadmium red, permanent alizarin crimson and raw umber.)
I’ve tried to capture the contrasts of light found, as sunlight bursts through the clouds and over the watery shore. Lovely reflections appear in the opaque wet sands as clouds form and dissipate over the seashore.
Like most of my contemporary seascapes, they concentrate on the essential qualities of the land, sea and sky experienced. Communicating these in a clear, minimal style. It is my hope that the feeling of being there and the feeling of connection with nature is enhanced.
Sunset out to sea would make a lovely reminder of an atmospheric sunset over the sea.
